On World Asthma Day 2026, we’re raising awareness of asthma- a condition affecting over 400 million people worldwide - and reflecting on the urgent need to rethink how we identify and manage its most serious forms.
Severe asthma continues to place a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems globally. At Optimum Patient Care (OPC), we’re proud to lead the International Severe Asthma Registry (ISAR), a collaborative global platform advancing real-world research at scale. With data from more than 38,000 patients across 32 countries and reaching 40 publications, ISAR is helping to transform our understanding of severe asthma and inform better care.
Our research continues to show that the approach of waiting for severe asthma to develop must change. This progression leads to irreversible damage, including long-term lung impairment. We must set a higher bar: identifying high-risk patients earlier, intervening appropriately, and aiming not just for control but for remission and long-term disease modification. This shift is essential if we are to reduce the burden of severe asthma and improve patient outcomes.
To mark World Asthma Day, our colleagues will attend a session led by Medical Scientists Celine Yun Yi Goh and Kirsty Fletton, highlighting key ISAR insights as we reflect on asthma as a global health priority, and the opportunity to do better.
